| # D4 | Carlo Albertini (?) - Milan - Italy |
This rare antique 6-string Milanese mandolin has no label, but I was told that it probably has been built by Carlo Albertini from Milan around the middle of the 19th century. It has nice mother-of-pearl inlays around the soundhole and an ebony scratch plate. The lute-like headstock has 6 tuning pegs also made of ebony as well as the scalloped fingerboard. The top is made of spruce, the round back has 15 ribs made of maple and probably rosewood. The mandolin has some smaller repaired cracks on the soundboard but is in a really good looking and well playable condition. It is stringed with nylon but I don't know what strings have to be used. The length of the mandolin is 22.5" (57 cm), the body is 11.5" (29cm) long and 8.5" (22 cm) wide, the scale length is about 12" (30 cm). |
